Yangjiao Cave
Highlights:It is the site that best embodies Chinese folk religious culture among the eight major scenic areas of Yandang Mountain.
Before it was incorporated into Yandangshan range, it was long known to the world by its own name—Fangshan—and had its own founding master. That master was a Taoist hermit. As a result, its series of caves and other structures are imbued with Taoist and shamanistic elements, making it the site with the strongest flavor of Chinese folk religious culture among the eight major scenic areas of Yandangshan. This scenic area consists of two parts: Yangjiao Cave and Shuanglong Valley. Covering a total of just 3 square kilometers, it is the smallest scenic area in Yandangshan. Yet it boasts a complete array of peaks, ridges, caves, waterfalls, pools, and lakes. Being the closest to the sea, every breath one takes is filled with the sound of the sea breeze, the patter of rain, the roar of the tides, and the mirage-like reflections—perfectly embodying a famous saying by a contemporary writer: “Though small, it is good; though good, it is small.” Yet, in the presence of Yandangshan, Yangjiao Cave can only step aside with humility, content to serve as a delicate shadow of Yandangshan.
